چکیده

Through a series of papers in the 1980’s, Bouchet introduced isotropic systems and the Tutte-Martin polynomial of an isotropic system. Then, Arratia, Bollobás, and Sorkin developed the interlace polynomial of a graph in [ABS00] in response to a DNA sequencing application. The interlace polynomial has generated considerable recent attention, with new results including realizing the original interlace polynomial by a closed form generating function expression instead of by the original recursive definition (see Aigner and van der Holst [AvdH04], and Arratia, Bollobás, and Sorkin [ABS04b]). Now, Bouchet [Bou05] recognizes the vertex-nullity interlace polynomial of a graph as the Tutte-Martin polynomial of an associated isotropic system. This suggests that the machinery of isotropic systems may be well-suited to investigating properties of the interlace polynomial. Thus, we present here an alternative proof for the closed form presentation of the vertex-nullity interlace polynomial using the machinery of isotropic systems. This approach both illustrates the intimate connection between the vertexnullity interlace polynomial and the Tutte-Martin polynomial of an isotropic system and also provides a concrete example of manipulating isotropic systems. We also provide a brief survey of related work.

The interlace polynomial of a graph

Motivated by circle graphs, and the enumeration of Euler circuits, we define a one-variable “interlace polynomial” for any graph. The polynomial satisfies a beautiful and unexpected reduction relation, quite different from the cut and fuse reduction characterizing the Tutte polynomial. It emerges that the interlace graph polynomial may be viewed as a special case of the Martin polynomial of an ...

Graph polynomials derived from Tutte-Martin polynomials

A graph polynomial q(G; ) has recently been studied byArratia et al. [The interlace polynomial: a new graph polynomial, in: Proceedings of the EleventhAnnual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Mathematics, San Francisco, CA, 2000, North-Holland, Amsterdam, pp. 237–245]. That polynomial can be derived from the restricted Tutte–Martin polynomial of an isotropic system, which we introduced [A. Bouchet...

On the interlace polynomials

The generating function that records the sizes of directed circuit partitions of a connected 2-in, 2-out digraph D can be determined from the interlacement graph of D with respect to a directed Euler circuit; the same is true of the generating functions for other kinds of circuit partitions. The interlace polynomials of Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 92 (2004) 199-233; C...

Graph polynomials from principal pivoting

The recursive computation of the interlace polynomial introduced by Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin is defined in terms of a new pivoting operation on undirected simple graphs. In this paper, we interpret the new pivoting operation on graphs in terms of standard pivoting (on matrices). Specifically, we show that, up to swapping vertex labels, Arratia et al.’s pivoting operation on a graph is equiv...

On the Complexity of the Interlace Polynomial

We consider the two-variable interlace polynomial introduced by Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin (2004). We develop two graph transformations which allow us to derive point-to-point reductions for the interlace polynomial. Exploiting these reductions we obtain new results concerning the computational complexity of evaluating the interlace polynomial at a fixed point. Regarding exact evaluation, we ...
